Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-06-15

This Privacy Policy explains how Cupid LLC, a Missouri limited liability company ("Cupid LLC," "we," "us," or "our"), collects, uses, and protects your information when you use Cupid, our SMS-first AI matchmaking service (the "Service"). Cupid is reachable by text at +1 (314) 377-7361 and on the web at textcupid.co.

We built Cupid so that privacy is structural, not an afterthought. The sections below describe what we collect, how we protect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

  • Your phone number. Needed to text you. We store it only in protected form, described in "How we protect your data" below.
  • What you tell Cupid. The conversation you have with the AI, which we use to build your matchmaking profile: your interests, values, what you are looking for, your dealbreakers, your general location, and similar details you choose to share.
  • Match and introduction activity. Records needed to propose matches, run anonymous video introductions, and exchange contact details when both people consent.
  • Limited technical and usage data. Basic information generated when you use the Service, used to keep it working and to understand product usage.

Because Cupid is a matchmaking service, the things you choose to share may include sensitive information, such as your relationship intentions, sexual orientation, or religion. We use this information only to match you and operate the Service, as described below, and we protect it using the measures in "How we protect your data."

Please share only what you are comfortable sharing. Cupid does not need sensitive identifiers, and you should not send payment card numbers, government IDs, or similar information over text.

2. How we use your information

  • To operate the Service: get to know you, build your profile, and propose matches.
  • To set up anonymous, time-limited video introductions and, on mutual consent, exchange first names and contact details.
  • To send you Service-related text messages.
  • To keep the Service safe, including detecting and responding to abuse.
  • To understand and improve how the Service works.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

3. How we protect your data

Privacy is built into how Cupid works:

  • Phone numbers are SHA-256 hashed and are never stored in plaintext.
  • Where a reverse lookup is needed to operate the Service, it is protected with AES-256-GCM encryption.
  • The database accepts no client-side connections. Access is server and administrator only.
  • Video introduction rooms are anonymous, time-limited, and automatically deleted.
  • Your name is shared with another person exactly once, and only when you both consent.

4. Service providers and sub-processors

We use a small set of trusted providers to run the Service. They process data only to provide their services to us. They are:

  • Anthropic (Claude): powers the conversational AI.
  • Twilio: delivers and receives text messages.
  • Daily.co: hosts the anonymous video introductions.
  • Google Cloud / Firebase: hosting and database.
  • Stripe: processes payments. Card details are handled by Stripe and are not stored by us.
  • PostHog: privacy-conscious product analytics. Phone numbers are hashed before any analytics event, so PostHog does not receive your phone number in plaintext.

5. We do not sell your personal data

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only with the service providers above, with other users as part of the matchmaking flow you agreed to, or when required by law.

6. Data retention and deletion

We keep your information only for as long as reasonably needed to provide the Service, support your matches, comply with legal obligations, and resolve disputes. After that, we delete or de-identify it.

You can request deletion of your data at any time by texting STOP and asking us to delete your data, or by emailing support@textcupid.co. We will delete your personal information except where we are required to retain it by law. Note that because phone numbers are stored hashed and never in plaintext, we identify your records through the hash of the number you contact us from.

Specific retention periods. We keep different types of data for different lengths of time:

  • Conversation and profile data. Kept while your profile is active. If you have no activity for 18 months, we delete or de-identify your conversation history and matchmaking profile.
  • Match and introduction records. Kept for up to 24 months to support ongoing and future matches, then deleted or de-identified.
  • Video introductions. Video and audio are never recorded or stored. Introduction rooms are created on demand and automatically deleted when the introduction ends.
  • Hashed phone number. Kept while your profile is active and for up to 18 months after your last activity, so we can honor STOP and deletion requests and prevent abuse. After that it is deleted.
  • Records of STOP and opt-out requests. Kept as long as needed to honor your opt-out and comply with law.
  • Payment records. Billing records are kept as long as required for tax, accounting, and legal purposes, typically up to seven years. Card details are held by Stripe, not by us.
  • Safety and abuse records. If we take action on a safety or abuse report, we may retain the related records in hashed form longer than the periods above, as needed to keep the Service safe and to comply with law.

When a retention period ends, we delete or irreversibly de-identify the data. Some data may persist briefly in encrypted backups before those backups cycle out.

7. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. We aim to honor these rights for all users, in the spirit of laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), regardless of where you are located. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.

Depending on your location, these rights include the right to know what personal information we hold, to access or receive a copy of it, to correct it, to delete it, to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information, and to limit the use of sensitive personal information. We aim to respond to verified requests within 45 days.

To exercise any of these rights, email support@textcupid.co. We may need to verify your request, for example by confirming control of the phone number associated with your profile.

8. Children

Cupid is for adults 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.

9. Security

We use the technical and organizational measures described above to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we design the Service to minimize what is stored and to protect what is.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
